lj weirdness
Some of you may have heard/noticed this whole LJ comment thing (especially people who play on kink memes). What you might NOT know is this is just the first of a whole host of changes that are coming from LJ. ok, so far, the most succinct summary I have found is here at raemia.

there's another set of links/roundup at sf_drama here

if you are migrating, and you haven't found me on dreamwidth, or if i haven't found you, please do!!

(there's a link at the bottom of this post for LJ friends. Additionally, we did create a mirror comm for Summer of Giles ([community profile] summer_of_giles) there, and it sounds like Dreamwidth is trying to create a community import (which would be AWESOME), so I'll be using that if I can when I can.

as for everything else, if you need/want a little humor that turns slightly dark (read the warnings), I am deeply amused by helens78's Maybe If We Just Wait (Things Will Improve) (Fandom/Livejournal, Angst, Relationship problems, G)

also posted to dreamwidth | you can reply here or there | um, but don't worry, i'm still an lj girl

Ugh... what a nightmare! Ok, I added you on dreamwidth. :)

Over the summer I had been cross posting because of all the issues with LJ, but I had fallen out of the habit. Time to revisit that policy. GRRRR. And move content. Double GRRRR...

woot, found you! and yeah, nightmare is just ... i have no words.

i've been crossposting for a while (i think the last time lj was being asshatty actually, but i don't want to remember what it was for that time) and honestly like it better.

the only thing that needs to move over and have activity is communities.... that's what's really makes lj actually work, you know?

Asshat is a favorite word of mine. I laughed out loud when you used it just now. And it was probably the umpteeth DDoS attack due to some Russian political event.

I didn't mind crossposting, it was fine, I just got lulled into complacency and went back to "business as usual."

Yeah, the question is how do you convince a community to move en masse?

Yeah, the question is how do you convince a community to move en masse?

THIS is the million dollar question! i have no answers. but amusingly right now fandom_secrets is taking polls to move... i wonder if other comms are? none that i'm on except for them. i think that's one of the only ways that dreamwidth is going to feel fully fleshed out, you know?

I agree. I came to LJ originally for the communities and found friends within them. Both are extremely important to me.

I want a place for all of us to play that is stable and takes into consideration what the userbase wants in a playground, ya know? LJ has lost that.

The last few times LJ had issues with the DDoS attacks, everyone seemed content to stick it out with them, even though the site was down. And during SoG... well, that was a nightmare those last few days. :( I was surprised people didn't jump ship then.

i think for whatever reason DDoS attacks feel like people from the outside are attacking "us" while LJ modifying their own code while removing functionality? splits "us" into "lj" and "us"

and i agree, having a place for everyone to play that is stable is the tough part... well, ok, no, i think dreamwidth is as stable as we're going to get, but only if we get enough people to go there. the amusing thing is that i just went and saw someone's "timeline" profile on facebook and had pretty much the exact same reaction to the format.

You've hit the nail on the head there. The "us vs them" mentality as opposed to "lj vs us." Personally, I have an issue with site downtime. I ran websites for a living. It's unacceptable really. I was ready to jump ship the last few times. LOL

The problem with most social network sites is that they pretty much don't care about their user base anymore. It's about egos and money and we'll just deal with it. The concern they have is "how do we direct eyeballs to the advertising?"

So many people I know were so disgusted with the last round of changes at Facebook that they jumped over to G+, but after a few days, G+ became a ghost town. No one posts there. I think the only updates are I see are occasional posts from a friend in Austria, a guy I knew at my old job but rarely interacted with, and Felicia Day. All the people who were so up in arms returned to Facebook days later.

Go figure.

Permission to link people to this, babe? I've got my own public support dreamwidth post too, if you ever want to add it to your list of reasons why people should switch. Should be my most recent entry. :)
